THE RESTORATION OF VILLA OLMI
From the magnificence of the late '800 to nowadays the estate progressively declined, the agricultural activity stopped, the park had been abandoned, the roofs started to gave way, ruining the frescoes below. Underneath the vegetation, the ruins and the temporary constructions a great part of the estate's beauty has been preserved, and also urban changes in the latest years has only slightly touched it, leaving the heart of the estate the same.
While restoring it, we immediately faced to be in front of a portion of land that summarizes all the typical Florentine's country characteristics and symbols. The villa, the farm, the park, the country house, the ancient way of communication to the country church, the oratory, were still there, like six hundred years ago; they had to be restored, each one according with their nature, new prospectives and connections had to be constructed. To intervene in this kind of estate means to spend all day in the building-yard, in fact the office work is limitated, the architectures have to be discovered a little at a time. To comprehend the buildings and bring them back to their original state means to search for little details, read the different kind of frescoes, compare the different types of walls.
The restore has been made in a strict cooperation with Sovrintendenza, consulting the archives, the aerial photos, the witnessing of the last inhabitants, making each time qualitative choises. The best craftsmen of florentine and italian tradition, bronzesmiths, glassmakers, decorators, like three hundred years ago, worked together in the building yard reaching high level results. Each space in the resort has been restored looking for its identity, recreating a various and complete surrounding that gives back the image of an ancient Florentine house, from the rooms with plasters to the vault of the cellars, made with bricks, from the Italian gardens to the privacy of the hortus conclusus.
The restore preserved and exploited the original and characteristics elements of each room, integrating them with the most sophisticated technologies. The furnishing is both made up of antique pieces and furniture designed especially for the place. Murano glass chandeliers, created in colours that matches with the architecture, precious upholsteries and big paintings give a special and unique character to each room. Underneath the plasters and varnishings, the hotel is arranged with the most up to date technologies.
The fittings distribution is realized with a ditch system, that brings hot and cold air, digital connections and sat tv in each room. The hotel produces electricity by itself because it's equipped with one of the first gas trigeneration power plant.
